It was a cold and
raining day in a small obscure town near the boarder of England and
Scotland. Memory does nay serve me well to remember which side of the border
we were on that night. Though, clearly I remember what we were doing. It was
a night of heavy drink and low spirits, weighing upon the minds of myself
and the one who became known as William Fitz, the clans' Barrister.
Why is it that all wealth and nobility is only passed on by birth? We are
men of good mind and sound thought why is it not in our futures, that with
work we could become those of noble stature and wealth? This thought
did trouble us. But with more drink and more thought on this we did devise
a plan. A scheme to become that which we were not.
I a common Scot of the MacTavish family and my friend an educated
Englishmen, with much knowledge of the laws. Who, though was educated in
the way of the laws was never allowed proper title, because he was nay
born of the right families.
The plan was quite simple actually, and we wondered why no one else had
attempted this before we did. We took what William knew of the law and
property ownership and a few well placed bribes, and turned that knowledge
into documents that showed ownership of large pieces of land in
Scotland. We did not actually own that land nor did we know who did, but
that mattered little, as we had no plans on actually taking possession of
it. We instead scraped together all the gold we could and made ourselves
up to appear to be of people who moved in higher circles in society. We
then mingled where we could, by sneaking into parties of the more social
elite English and portrayed our selves as having gotten into some heavy
debt. Masquerading as though it caused us great pain, but having little
choice left but to sell off the lands that were dear to us. At a generous
price as well I might add.
Well it did not take long until we had sold off all those phony papers and
quickly made our way back into Scotland. We had to do this quick or risk
getting caught while still holding the papers we forged. So back we went
and we waited and watched. Much as we expected the English who bought the
lands started arriving with men and with servants, with guards and escort.
This is where our plans got much easier; the people who owned the lands
thought that they were being pushed out by the English, which raised great
outrage. As well this worked as before we made our trip to England with
our forged documents in hand we leaked that the English were going to move
on Scotland again. As everyone knows, this never settles well with the
Scots.
So, when we saw the English coming to claim what they thought they owned,
we went to the Highlanders and told them that Scotland was again being
invaded. We told every Scot that would listen and take arms against the
English that; the English again were taking chunks of Scotland and
harassing the Scots. But the beauty part of this was when we took their
own gold and hired mercenaries to aid in the battle to push the English
back into England.
Well all this started a hell of a ruckus and whole new battle over
Scotland broke out. It was not a huge battle or a long lived one. But one
that worked well enough for our needs. Needless to say, the English nay
being prepared for this little maneuver lost the battle and those holding
the false documents found out that the paper was worthless. While their
gold still chinked quite nicely in our purses. Though William and I being
sound thinkers, as I stated earlier, took arms with the Scots and aided in
fighting the English, and as a spoil to this we claimed a small castle by
the name of Blackness as our home.
The dust has settled on all this now, and to protect ourselves as well as
those who helped us; we took on new names, and started the Clan of Dracmor.
We decided from that point on that all who have some history that they
wished to hide, or those who were wanted, especially those who were wanted
by the English, would be given safe haven and protection amongst the
Dracmors. Each would be given the name of their choosing and would be able
to call Clan Dracmor their family and Blackness their home.
And this be how the Clan got started.
Me? I took my share and bought myself title, and set myself before the
English court as a proper noblemen of Scotland. As for I have said on many
occasion, the best place to hide is in the wide open and right under their
noses. |
